The Mardi Himal Trek via Dhampus is a rewarding short trek in the Annapurna region that perfectly blends natural beauty, cultural immersion, and high-altitude adventure. Starting from Pokhara, the trail leads through traditional Gurung villages, terraced farmlands, and lush rhododendron and oak forests before ascending into alpine landscapes. As altitude increases, the trek offers dramatic and ever-changing views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the Mardi Himal range.

The highlight of the journey is the hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), where trekkers are rewarded with close-up Himalayan panoramas, glaciers, and rugged ridgelines. Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Drive duration: approx. 1–1.5 hours’ drive | Trek duration: approx. 4–5 hours’ trek

Altitude: Dhampus – 1,650 m, Forest Camp – 1,850 m

Begin with a scenic drive from Pokhara, passing by sparkling rivers, small villages, and terraced fields. The trek from Dhampus starts with gentle uphill paths lined with traditional Gurung houses and farm terraces. As you ascend, lush rhododendron and oak forests envelop the trail, creating a serene natural atmosphere. Views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli emerge intermittently through the trees, offering photo-worthy stops. The trail also gives a glimpse into rural life—locals tending livestock, children waving from homes, and small tea houses providing traditional snacks. Overnight at Forest Camp, surrounded by the forest, allows you to soak in the peaceful sounds of nature.

Day 2

Trek duration: 5–6 hours’ trek | Altitude: Forest Camp – 1,850 m, High Camp – 3,450 m

Today’s trail is more challenging, climbing steeply through dense forests and bamboo groves. The path is dotted with streams, small waterfalls, and occasional stone steps built by local communities. As altitude increases, trees thin out and the landscape opens to sweeping views of the Annapurna Massif and Mardi Himal. The air becomes crisp and clean, and the trail showcases alpine vegetation, wildflowers, and occasional sightings of Himalayan birds. High Camp offers sweeping panoramic views of Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal, making it a prime spot for sunset and pre-dawn photography. Overnight here helps with acclimatization before the Base Camp hike.

Day 3

Trek duration: approx. 6–7 hours (round trip)

Altitude: High Camp – 3,450 m, Mardi Himal Base Camp – 4,500 m, Badal Danda – 3,700 m

The trail from High Camp to Base Camp starts steeply and gradually winds through rugged alpine terrain. Rocky paths, loose gravel, and occasional snow patches make this the most adventurous section of the trek. Upon reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp, trekkers are rewarded with 360° panoramic views of Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, and Mardi Himal. The Base Camp is surrounded by dramatic ridges, glaciers, and alpine meadows. After taking in the stunning vistas, descend to Badal Danda, passing small alpine streams, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and quiet meadows dotted with wildflowers. Overnight at Badal Danda offers a peaceful retreat with clear night skies perfect for stargazing.

Day 4

Trek duration: approx. 5–6 hours’ trek | Altitude: Badal Danda – 3,700 m, Landruk – 1,565 m

Today is a descent through ever-changing landscapes—from high alpine ridges to lush mid-hill forests. The trail winds through bamboo groves, cascading streams, and terraced fields, giving trekkers a chance to appreciate the diversity of the Annapurna region. Small waterfalls and local farms provide plenty of natural stops along the way. Landruk is a traditional Gurung village, offering a rich cultural experience. Trekkers can explore stone-paved paths, observe local farm life, visit village temples, and enjoy warm hospitality at local teahouses. Views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South from different angles add to the scenic charm.

Day 5

Trek duration: approx. 2–3 hours’ trek | Drive duration: approx. 45–60 minutes’ drive

Altitude: Landruk – 1,565 m, Phedi – 1,100 m, Pokhara – 820 m

The final day is an easy, downhill trek through forests, farmland, and small settlements, giving trekkers a chance to reflect on their journey. Along the trail, you’ll see terraced fields, irrigation canals, and local wildlife. Upon reaching Phedi, a short drive returns you to Pokhara. The city offers a relaxing end to the adventure, with opportunities to stroll along Phewa Lake, explore local markets, or enjoy a café with mountain views.
