The trek begins with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, offering aerial views of snow-covered peaks and deep river valleys before landing on one of the world’s most famous mountain airstrips. Trip ItineraryFlight Time: 30–35 minutes | Trek Duration: 3 hours
Your journey begins early in the morning with a spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. This short but thrilling flight takes you between green hills and snow-capped peaks — a breathtaking prelude to the adventure ahead. If you can, grab a window seat on the left-hand side for unmatched views of the Himalayan range, including Langtang Lirung, Gauri Shankar, and Everest gleaming in the distance.
Landing on Tenzing-Hillary Airport’s sloped runway, perched dramatically on a mountain ridge, is an experience in itself. Once your trekking crew is organized, the trail descends gently toward the Dudh Koshi River, following a well-marked path lined with mani stones, colorful prayer flags, and Buddhist stupas — the first taste of Khumbu spirituality.
As you walk, you’ll encounter yaks and dzopkyos (yak-cow hybrids) carrying loads of supplies, their bells echoing in the mountain air. You’ll pass through traditional Sherpa villages like Chheplung and Ghat, where smiling locals greet you with a cheerful “Namaste.” The route winds through pine and rhododendron forests, and the sound of the rushing Dudh Koshi accompanies you all the way to Phakding, a charming riverside settlement.
Settle into a cozy teahouse overlooking the river, enjoy your first taste of hearty mountain cuisine, and rest well — tomorrow, you’ll step deeper into the high Himalayas.
Trek Duration: 4–5 hours
After breakfast beside the Dudh Koshi, the trail leads north through a series of picturesque villages, suspension bridges, and forested valleys. The day begins gently, following the turquoise river as it tumbles over smooth boulders. You’ll cross several suspension bridges, draped in prayer flags that flutter in the crisp mountain breeze — a classic Himalayan sight.
The trail passes through Tok Tok, Benkar, and Monjo, where you’ll officially enter Sagarmatha National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, your guide will handle the permit check, and you can take a short rest while enjoying views of Thamserku (6,623 m) rising steeply above the valley. Keep an eye out for Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and the colorful Danphe pheasant, Nepal’s national bird, as you trek through the forest.
Just beyond Jorsalle, the trail begins to climb steeply toward Namche Bazaar. The Hillary Suspension Bridge, one of the highest in the region, marks the start of a long ascent — a steady climb through pine forests and along switchback trails. If the weather is clear, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest, a thrilling moment for every trekker.
After the final push, the trees open up to reveal the amphitheater-shaped town of Namche Bazaar, nestled into a natural bowl beneath the towering peaks. This vibrant Sherpa capital is the main trading hub of the Khumbu, filled with colorful shops, bakeries, and teahouses. Settle in and explore — you’ve earned your rest.
Optional Day Hike: 2–5 hours
Namche is the perfect place to acclimatize while soaking up local life. The town itself is fascinating — a lively mix of trekking shops, coffee houses, and market stalls where you can find everything from yak cheese to handcrafted jewelry.
After breakfast, consider hiking up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m), one of the highest luxury hotels in the world, for a panoramic outlook of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the stunning Ama Dablam. The one-hour climb rewards you with one of the most photogenic views in the Himalayas. On the way, you can visit Khumjung Village, home to the Sir Edmund Hillary School and Khunde Hospital, both established by Hillary’s Himalayan Trust.
Back in Namche, you might explore the Sherpa Culture Museum, perched above the village, or visit the Namche Monastery, where locals gather for prayer. In the afternoon, sip hot tea on a sunny terrace, watching clouds drift across Everest’s slopes. Namche’s relaxed atmosphere and mountain views make it a perfect mid-trek recharge.
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours
Rise early to the sight of sunlight spilling over the peaks, then retrace your steps back down toward Lukla. The descent through pine and juniper forests feels different now — you’re walking with the satisfaction of having conquered high trails.
The route winds past Monjo, Benkar, and Phakding, following the Dudh Koshi River downstream. You’ll cross suspension bridges once more, their colorful prayer flags marking the way, and pass through terraced fields dotted with grazing yaks and stone cottages. Along the way, take time to stop at teahouses for tea and conversation — the friendliness of the Sherpa people is one of the trek’s great joys.
The final stretch to Lukla includes a short uphill climb, a symbolic finish to your Himalayan journey. As you enter through the Pasang Lhamu Memorial Gate, marking the end of the trail, you’ll feel a deep sense of accomplishment.
Spend the evening celebrating with your trekking crew. Lukla, though small, has a few lively cafés and bakeries — and even a “Starbucks” (in name only!) — where trekkers gather to share stories and laughter before returning to the lowlands.
Flight Time: 30–35 minutes
Wake early for your return flight to Kathmandu. As your plane lifts off the short runway, take one last look at the rugged valleys and glacial peaks of the Khumbu below — a final glimpse of the land you’ve trekked through.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax, shop for souvenirs in Thamel, or unwind with a Nepali meal and live music. The contrast between the peaceful mountains and the colorful chaos of Kathmandu is part of what makes this adventure unforgettable.
