Package Overview

The Pikey Peak Trek is a unique and less-crowded Himalayan adventure in eastern Nepal, offering stunning panoramic views, rich Sherpa culture, and serene alpine landscapes. Beginning with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap, the trek passes through traditional Sherpa and Rai villages, terraced farmlands, and rhododendron-filled forests. As the trail ascends toward Pikey Base Camp and the summit of Pikey Peak (4,065 m), trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking 360° vistas of the entire Himalayan range, including Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Gaurishankar, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna.

The trek also explores cultural highlights such as the Sherpa villages of Junbesi and Loding, traditional monasteries like Thupten Chholing and Chiwong Gompa, and local festivals. Returning via Phaplu and a scenic drive back to Kathmandu completes a journey that perfectly combines adventure, mountain scenery, and cultural immersion, making it ideal for trekkers seeking both natural beauty and authentic Himalayan experiences.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Altitude: 2,950 m / 9,678 ft | Drive Time: 8–9 hours

Your adventure begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu after breakfast. The road journey to Dhap takes about 8 to 9 hours, passing through diverse landscapes that showcase the geographical variety of Nepal. The route follows the Arniko Highway initially, winding through the lush hills of Dhulikhel, before descending toward the fertile Gangetic plains of the Terai — just 50 km north of the Indian border.

As the drive continues, you’ll travel alongside the Sun Koshi River, one of Nepal’s major rivers flowing from Tibet, before the road climbs steeply through terraced farmlands and charming mid-hill settlements. The air becomes cooler and fresher as you approach Dhap, a small settlement surrounded by pine forests and rolling hills. From here, you can already catch your first glimpse of the distant snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Overnight at a cozy mountain lodge in Dhap.

Day 2

Altitude: 2,820 m / 9,252 ft | Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

Your first trekking day begins on a gentle trail that soon leaves the motor road behind. The path gradually climbs and dips through rhododendron forests, especially vibrant in spring when the hillsides come alive with shades of red, pink, and white blossoms. You’ll pass through traditional Sherpa and Rai villages, where locals are often seen tending to terraced fields of potatoes, barley, and vegetables.

The walk offers a taste of Himalayan rural life — mani walls and prayer flags flutter in the breeze, small stupas dot the landscape, and the sound of distant bells from yak herds can occasionally be heard. After around 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Jhapre, a picturesque settlement perched on a ridge overlooking a deep valley. From here, the first clear views of Mount Everest (8,848 m) and Numbur Himal (6,959 m) appear. The village also has a small Buddhist gompa (monastery) and stupa, making it a serene place to stay overnight and soak in the peaceful mountain ambiance.

Day 3

Altitude: 3,640 m / 11,942 ft | Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

Today’s trek is a rewarding one as you gain altitude and reach closer to the iconic Pikey Peak. The trail starts with a steady climb through open meadows and a grassy ridge at Bhulbhule (approx. 3,300 m), from where panoramic views of the Himalayan range unfold. There’s a small lodge here — a perfect spot for tea and photographs.

Soon after Bhulbhule, the path splits; you’ll take the right trail leading to Pikey Peak. The trail contours along Taklung Danda ridge, meandering through dense rhododendron and pine forests. If trekking in spring, you’ll walk beneath canopies of blooming flowers alive with birds and buzzing bees. You’ll pass old yak herder huts, mani walls, and possibly encounter grazing herds in the high pastures. After emerging from the forest, it’s a short walk across alpine terrain to reach Pikey Base Camp, nestled beneath the towering summit of Pikey Peak. Overnight at a lodge surrounded by Himalayan serenity.

Day 4

Altitude: Summit: 4,065 m, Loding: 2,515 m | Trek Duration: 6–7 hours total

Rise early for one of the most unforgettable Himalayan experiences — a sunrise hike to Pikey Peak. The climb is gentle but steady, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the summit. The trail is draped in colorful prayer flags that lead the way to the top, where a magnificent 360° panorama awaits. On a clear morning, you can witness a breathtaking sweep of the Himalayan range — from Kanchenjunga in the east to Dhaulagiri in the west, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Gaurishankar, Manaslu, and Annapurna. Sir Edmund Hillary himself regarded this as his favorite Everest view in Nepal.

After spending time at the summit, you’ll descend back to the base camp for breakfast, then continue your trek along a ridgeline that passes through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. The path gradually descends toward Jase Bhanjyang, then continues through dense forest with moss-covered trees, leading to Loding, a peaceful village nestled in the lower valley. The descent takes 4–5 hours in total. Overnight in a comfortable local lodge.

Day 5

Altitude: 2,700 m / 8,858 ft | Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, continue along a scenic forest trail that leads to Taktor, where you’ll rejoin the classic Everest Base Camp trail that originates from Jiri. This section of the trek passes through ancient woodlands filled with oak, magnolia, and rhododendron trees, and you might spot Himalayan monals or langurs along the way.

Soon, you’ll reach Junbesi, one of the most beautiful and culturally rich Sherpa villages in Solukhumbu. Known as the cradle of Sherpa culture, Junbesi sits in a wide valley surrounded by green hills and dotted with traditional houses built of stone and wood. The village is also home to several Buddhist monasteries, including the Thupten Chholing Monastery, which can be visited in the afternoon. Founded by Trulsik Rinpoche in the 1960s, this sacred monastery houses hundreds of monks and nuns and is an important center for Tibetan Buddhism in the region. Overnight at a charming lodge in Junbesi.

Day 6

Altitude: 2,960 m / 9,711 ft | Trek Duration: 5 hours

Today’s trek marks your final walking day. The trail descends gradually through pine forests and scattered Sherpa villages toward Phaplu, a small town that serves as the administrative center of lower Solukhumbu. Along the way, you’ll have the option to take a short detour to Chiwong Gompa, a monastery dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the valley. Founded in 1923, Chiwong is best known for hosting the Mani Rimdu Festival each autumn, one of the most vibrant Sherpa Buddhist celebrations in the Everest region.

Continue your descent into Phaplu, where you’ll celebrate the completion of your trek with a warm meal and a relaxed evening. The area is known for its hospitable Sherpa families, local cheese, and cultural warmth. Overnight at a cozy teahouse or lodge.
